چکیده

IN THE PAST, clinical assessment of left ventricular function has been largely limited to the measurement of pressure and flow. Recently methods have been developed for the in vivo measurement of left ventricular volumes in man.1-3 Rackley and associates4 have described a method for determining left ventricular mass. The determination of left ventricular volume and mass are of definite help in evaluating the functional status of the left ventricular myocardium in patients with heart disease. In order to understand changes in disease, however, normal values for left ventricular volume and mass must be established. Currently, little data are available on the volume of the left ventricle in the normal adult, and no measurements of the normal left ventricular mass during life by this angiographic method are available. This paper reports the volume and mass of the left ventricle in a group of normal adults. Normal values for left ventricular volume reported in the literature measured by angiographic and indicatordilution techniques are presented and discussed.

Ventricular performance after angiocardiography.

Ventricular performance was assessed before and after angiocardiography in 22 patients with normal left ventricle, mitral stenosis, aortic stenosis, and myocardial disease. The increased circulating blood volume known to occur after angiocardiography is a determinant of the increased ventricular pre-load. The after-load is unchanged. Patients with normal left ventricle and some patients with va...

Left ventricular mechanical efficiency in man with heart disease.

Thirty-eight adults with valvular and/or myocardial disease had heart catheterization with coronary blood flow and myocardial O2 consumption (MVO2) per 100 g measured by the nitrous oxide washout technique. Quantitative biplane angiocardiography was performed to assess left ventricular volume, mass, ejection fraction and work. Left ventricular efficiency was calculated from work, MVO2/100 g and...

Shrinkage of the heart in anesthetized, thoracotomized dogs.

Changes in heart size have been studied by means of intra ventricular gages, serial roentgenography and cinefluoiographic angiocardiography. Evidence is presented that the area of the cardiac silhouette and the area and diameter of the left ventricle all diminish in response to thoracotomy and during recovery return toward the pre-operative dimensions. Since fundamental concepts of cardiac func...

Rapid disappearance of left ventricular mass (presumed thrombus) in a patient with cardiomyopathy.

A man aged 41 years with a clinical diagnosis of cardiomyopathy and hepatic insufficiency was found, on angiocardiography, to have a mass, presumably a thrombus, within the left ventricle. A second angiocardiogram performed five days later showed that the thrombus had disappeared. The mechanism invoked was more probably an increase of spontaneous fibrinolysis as described in cirrhotic patients,...

Measurement of peak rates of left ventricular wall movement in man. Comparison of echocardiography with angiography.

Estimates of peak systolic and diastolic rates of left ventricular wall movement were made in 23 patients by echocardiography and angiocardiography. Echocardiographic measurements were calculated as the rate of change of the transverse left ventricular dimension, derived continuously throughout the cardiac cycle. These were compared with similar plots of transverse left ventricular diameter, in...
